Downworlders

Downworlders Are:
  • Downworlders are hybrid creatures, or people other than the Nephilim with different supernatural abilities. Said to be; Half Human and Half Demon.
Downworlders consist of the Fair Folk (Faeries), Children of the Night (Vampires), Children of the Moon (Werewolves), the Children of Lilith (Warlocks), etc.
  • Downworlders cannot bare the marks of the Shadowhunters. The only rune they can bare is the Alliance rune created by Clary Fray, that allows Downworlders and Nephilim to share abilities.

Runes

Runes:
  • Runes or Marks are angelic symbols that the Nephilim burn into their skin, using steles, to give them various "supernatural" abilities.
Runes are the Nephilim or Shadowhunters most used tool to help fight demons. Runes are a complex array of symbols and language given to Shadowhunters by the angel Raziel, that give Nephilim a power mundanes can not bare.
  • They were given to the first generation of Shadowhunters by Angel Raziel so that they could fight off demons. Every rune accessed by a Shadowhunter is written in the Gray Book.
Most runes are temporary and fade off, leaving a thin white scar in its place. Other runes are permanent and stay on forever.
  • If a rune written in the Gray Book is burned into a mundane, it can drive them insane and turn them into Forsaken.
The closer the rune is to the heart the more effective the rune's power or ability is. Most runes can be placed on other objects like rocks or bricks.

Shadowhunters

Shadowhunters Protect:
  • They protect the world from being overrun by demons and protect mundanes from evil. Keep Downworlders in check and make sure that Shadowhunters themselves and Downworlders are fair to each other. They also make sure that there are no disruptions in the Shadowhunter world.
Shadowhunters Are:
  • Half Angel and Half Human.
They are like the reinforcement relating to the Downworlders and use holy weapons to kill demons.

The Clave

The Clave:
  • Government > Circle
The Clave make the laws that Shadowhunters and Downworlders have to abide by. The Clave is the government of Shadowhunters and Downworlders, they inforce the laws so that Shadowhunters and Downworlders get along.
  • Only Shadowhunter adults go on the Clave. Up until City of Glass when Downworlder leaders are given seats in the Clave.

The Mortal Instruments

There are 3 Mortal Instruments:

  • The Mirror
  • The Mortal Cup
  • The Sword
These 3 items are used to protect and create Shadowhunters, and find the truth in them.

If in possesion of all 3 Mortal Instruments, you have the power to summon Angel Raziel.

Luke Garroway

Luke Garroway is a trusted friend of Jocelyn Fray, Clary's mother. He also likes Jocelyn as more than a friend, but that love is not returned. Before Luke was bitten by a werewolf he was a Shadowhunter in Valentine's circle and also Valentine's best friend. When Luke was bitten Valentine disowned him and asked Luke to kill himself. Luke didn't which infuriated Valentine, especially when Jocelyn left Valentine. Luke is Clary's father figure in the book series and gets very involved in Clary's Shadowhunter life. Luke is also head of a werewolf pack in New York. While Clary's mom is in a coma, Luke looks after Clary. Another name Luke goes by is Lucian Graymark.

Max Lightwood

Max is the adopted younger brother of Jace. He is also the younger brother of Isabelle and Alec. Being as young as he is, Max is often ignored and not invited into "adult" conversations. Max isn't really introduced into the series until the end of City of Bones. Max has a huge thing for comic books and thinks of Clary as a sister. Clary always gives him comic books and sometimes reads with him. In City of Glass something terrible happens to Max that stops him from being in the rest of the series.

Clary Fray

Clary is another main character in the series. She is suppose to be petite with green eyes and long red hair. Clary was brought up as a mundane (human) in the city of Manhattan. On her 15th birthday she was introduced into the world of the Shadowhunters and Downworlders, later finding out she was a Shadowhunter herself. She was also introduced to demons and .. Jace. The minute Jace and Clary met they had a connection. Even after they found out they were "siblings" they're love kept growing, though they tried to contain it. Her mother is Jocelyn. Clary also goes by Clary Fairchild and Clary Morgenstern.

Simon Lewis

Simon is Clary's bestfriend, and is currently in love with her (although Isabelle Lightwood changes that). Simon is suppose to have brown hair and brown eyes and wear glasses. Throughout the series Simon is jealous of Jace because of the love between Jace and Clary. During his time spent with Clary and her new Shadowhunter friends he gets turned into a vampire (while searching for the High Warlock of Brooklyn). Even though Simon is a vampire he isn't affected by daylight, this is a result of drinking Jace's blood. In City of Fallen Angels Simon falls in love with Isabelle. He also goes by Daylighter, Mundane, and Vampire.

Isabelle Lightwood

Isabelle is the adopted sister of Jace. She is suppose to be very beautiful with a tall, slim figure and long black hair. She always carries around a whip and is very skilled with it. She has an older brother named Alec and a younger brother named Max. Isabelle's parents run the Institute in New York and is good friends with Clary. Isabelle is 16 years old.

Alec Lightwood

Alec is the adopted brother of Jace. He is the oldest of the group and is suppose to have black hair and blue eyes. He is the older brother of Isabelle and Max. During the beginning of the series Alec doesn't like Clary very much, but that is because he thinks he's in love with Jace. In City of Ashes Alec starts to fall in love with the High Warlock of Brooklyn, Magnus Bane. Although he denies it because he is too stubborn to realize that he doesn't actually love Jace. As the series progresses Alec warms up to Clary and Simon. Alec, being 18 and the oldest, is considered the adult the group. Therefor Alec has to take the most responsibility and is also part of the city council.

Magnus Bane

Magnus Bane is also known as the High Warlock of Brooklyn. He is suppose to be extremely powerful with Asian features, a lean muscly figure, goldish green cat like eyes, black hair, and brown skin. He is usually dressed up with glitter or spikes in his hair and flashy outfits with loads of make up. Magnus was the Warlock who was paid to take away Clary's memories to hide her from the Shadowhunter world. In City of Glass Clary gets him the Book of the White which has the potion Clary needs to revive her mother. Magnus also has a "intimate" relationship with Alec.

Jocelyn Fray

Jocelyn is Clary and Sebastian's (Jonathan) mother. Jocelyn moved to New York with Clary in hopes of never seeing Valentine again and to protect Clary from the Shadowhunter world. In the first book City of Bones Jocelyn is taken by Valentine and his demons, but before he could get through the door Jocelyn takes a potion that puts her under a coma so that she doesn't tell him about the Mortal Cup's whereabouts. Before Jocelyn found out what Valentine was really up to, she was his wife and their love was endless. When Jocelyn found out Valentine's actual plan, she dropped out of the circle and fled to New York with Clary thinking that her son, Jonathan, was burned to death along with Valentine himself. She also goes by Jocelyn Fairchild and Jocelyn Morgenstern.

Valentine Morgenstern

Valentine Morgenstern is the father of Clary and Sebastian (Jonathan). He is described as having white blonde hair, black colored eyes, and a lean muscular figure. When Valentine and Jocelyn got married Valentine started a group called the Circle. Valentine wanted to rebel against the Clave, to do this he started the Circle. He also tried to make him and his family more powerful, so he experimented on himself and his unborn children. When Jocelyn was carrying her first child, Jonathan, he slipped demon blood into food and drinks making Jonathan a half Shadowhunter and half demon newborn. When Jocelyn was carrying her second child, Clary, he slipped angel blood in which made Clary have the ability to create new ruins.

Jace Wayland

Jace is one of the main characters of the book series. He is suppose to have wavy blonde hair and gold eyes. He was claimed to be the son of Michael Wayland (deceased) but really was the son of Valentine pretending to be Michael. After "Michael died" the Lightwoods took Jace in and he lived with them in the Institute in New York. There he met Clary, was later found out to be his "sister", but they have a relationship not normal for "siblings" (aka they're in love). Jace is probably one of the best Shadowhunters of his time, but keep in mind that he isn't just a Shadowhunter. In the third book City of Glass we find out that Jace and Clary are not, in fact, brother and sister but they both have angel blood in them. Jace is actually the son of Celine Herondale, but Valentine gave Celine potions and powders with the angel blood in it. Jace is also known as Jace Lightwood, Jonathan/Jace Mergenstern, Jace/Jonathan Herondale.

City of Glass

In order to pull Clary's mother out of her coma, Clary must travel to the City of Glass in search of a powerful warlock named Ragnor Fell. Many of the Shadowhunters are going to Idris to meet with the Clave and discuss matters involving Valentine, but with Jace determined for her not to go, he gave her the wrong time. When the portal was finally opened and Clary was at home packing, the group of Shadowhunters were attacked. To save themselves from being killed and to keep Simon from dying, the portal was their only option. When Clary finally arrived and found out they had left without her, she used her ability to create new runes and opened another portal to Idris, which was not permitted. Clary went through with Luke on her heels, and they both landed in Lake Lyn. To keep Clary from dying of Lake Lyn's poisonous waters, Luke had to break into Idris to seek help from his sister. Before Clary wakes up, Luke leaves without a description of where he was leaving to. Clary sneaks out to find Jace and the Lightwoods, which is an unpleasant surprise for Jace. There she meets Sebastian Verlac, who walks her home and helps her to find Ragnor Fell, who is instead Magnus Bane. Sebastian is frozen and Clary is told to find the Book of the White in the Wayland Manor, which holds the recipe of a potion that will pull Clary's mom out of her coma. Valentine, on the otherhand, decides to wage a war against the Clave giving them the option to either side with Downworlders and fight, or side with Valentine. When the Clave decide to side with Luke and the Downworlders, Valentine flees to Lake Lyn to summon Angel Raziel and create a more powerful version of Shadowhunters with demon blood in them. Raziel denies his request and kills Valentine, granting Clary's wish to bring Jace back to life.

City of Ashes

Just recently Clary Fray found out that there were two worlds. The world she had lived in for 15 years and the world of the Shadowhunters. Although Clary wants her old life back and more than anything to spend time with a growing flame, Simon, the Shadowhunter world doesn't seem reluctant to let her go. With her mom in a potion induced coma and Clary's new ability to see things that normal mundanes shouldn't be able to see, like Downworlders, the option of leaving the Shadowhunter world is all but dissipated. In her search to pull her mother out of her trance, Clary just might have to throw away everything she use to know and track down her only chance of getting her mother out, the evil Valentine, who also happens to be Clary's father. But to defeat Valentine, Clary must seek the help of her new found brother, Jace, if he is willing to side with Clary and go against the father he thought was dead.

City of Bones

When 15-year old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club with her friend Simon, her world is turned upside down. She witnesses a murder committed by three teenagers on a boy that wasn't even an actual boy. The weirdest part yet is that she seems to be the only one witnessing it, even though the club is full of people. Traumatized by what she had just seen, Clary decides to forget it even happened, but it is hard to forget when one of the teenagers, Jace Wayland, continues to make pop-up appearances. When Clary finally confronts Jace, her mother gets attacked and abducted, and she is forced to fight    a demon. This causes a ripple of events that lead her to finding out if the life she had been living for 15 years was really her life at all.
